SAFELOOP (Securely Advancing Future EVs with Li-IOn batteries through Optimized Pathways) has been funded.

In 2023, Efund initiated and supported the consortium coordinated by University of Oulu, in the preparation and submission of a successful proposal to the call HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-02 – New Approaches to Develop Enhanced Safety Materials for Gen 3 Li-Ion Batteries for Mobility Applications (Batt4EU Partnership).

The EU-funded SAFELOOP project addresses a critical challenge for the electric mobility sector: ensuring the safety and sustainability of lithium-ion batteries throughout their entire life cycle, from production to end-of-life and recycling. SAFELOOP brings together 15 partners from 11 countries, spanning research, manufacturing, and industry. The project is a Europe-led, transatlantic collaboration aimed at:

  • Enhancing EV battery safety at all stages: from materials handling, battery manufacturing and transport, to in-use performance, maintenance, and end-of-life processing.
  • Reducing dependence on imported critical raw materials by building a resilient European supply chain.
  • Achieving up to 25% recycled and rejuvenated battery-active materials in next-generation EV-rated lithium-ion batteries.
  • Targeting an ambitious 90% recycling rate within 10 years, approaching the benchmark set by today’s lead-acid battery industry.

More information about the project will soon be available on the SAFELOOP website and the European Commission website.
