🌍 MOIRAI: Unlocking ocean cycles for climate resilience

The MOIRAI project officially began in January 2025. Initiated by Efund in 2024 and coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens, the EU-funded consortium unites 15 partners from 6 countries to revolutionize multi-scale ocean and climate modelling.

At its core, MOIRAI will develop, test, and implement the next generation of regional-to-coastal physical and biogeochemical climate models, tailored for the Copernicus Marine Service and the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. Applied in the European Arctic Ocean, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean, the framework will be replicable across all European seas.

By integrating historical data, current observations, and future projections, MOIRAI will deliver more accurate seasonal-to-multi-decadal predictions. The project will create new ocean state, systemic vulnerability, and resilience indicators, while its flagship platform, REASSHORE, will empower policymakers, coastal managers, and industries with actionable, relocatable, on-demand climate services.

MOIRAI also explores the intersection of the blue economy, ecosystem services, and sustainability objectives, supporting aquaculture, offshore energy, and shipping through climate-smart services and multi-use strategies. By addressing extreme events, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem resilience, MOIRAI contributes to a carbon-neutral blue economy and enhances food and energy security.
